Herbivores or Plant Eaters had short flat teeth.  They ate all kinds of plants that they were able to reach.  Some of them stayed with their families and took care of their young.  Most of them had something that protected them from the meat eating dinosaurs.  They were able to run fast if they had no protection on them.

Brontosaurus was his name, now it is

Apatosaurus .  He is the thunder lizard. This giant was about 70 feet long and weighed about 30 tons or 60,000 pounds.  It had a tiny head and a small mouth, but a long neck that reach high to eat plants.  He used his long tail to whip the meat eaters if he was attacked.

Because he was so heavy, it  hardly left the water.  It floated in the water keeping the weight off its feet.  The water also protected Apatosaurus from the meat eating dinosaurs who were afraid of it.  Apatosaurus had to come out of the water to lay her eggs on land.  That is usually when it was attacked by the meat eating dinosaurs.

Stegosaurus was a herbivore that means he was a plant eater.  Stegosaurus means the covered lizard because of the plates sticking up from his back.  Those plates may have protected him from the carnivores, or meat eaters.  The sharp spikes on his tail were   probably used to fight the meat eaters.

Stegosaurus had a tiny brain and was not smart.  He also had another brain by his tail.

Stegosaurus lived with their families.

The Triceratops, or "three horned face," had a short horn on its nose and a long horn above each eye.  It had a beak like a parrot.  Its skull was 7 feet from its nose to its neck shield.  The horns were 39 inches long.  They were used as protection against the carnivores.

It was more than 20 feet long.

Triceratops was a plant eater, a herbivore.  Triceratops traveled in herds.  They protected and cared for their babies.

Diplodocus was the longest of the long necks.  He was more slender than the others, but was longer.  He measured 90 feet from his tail to his head.  It is believed that he had 2 brains.  One brain was to control his upper body and the other, by the base of his spine, was to control his tail.

A huge herbivore  that ate plants all day.  It had blunt teeth used to tear plants.  Diplodocus swallowed many leaves and plants without chewing them.

Ankylosaurus was the most protected of all the dinosaurs.  His long flat back was completely covered with a bony armor.  The bony armor wasn't hard like the shell of a turtle , but was moveable, like the bony armor of today's armadillo.  Bony spikes stuck out of his side.  There was a bony club at the end of his tail.

This herbivore was as long as stegosaurus.  He  ate plants that were low to the ground.  There really wasn't much worry about a carnivore with all of his protection!

Iguanodon had hands shaped like humans.  The thumb was a spiked claw.  He probably used his spiked claws to protect himself from the carnivores.

Another name for Iguanodon was "Bird Footed" because of his bird like feet.  He was about 30 feet long

and 8 feet high.  He was a herbivore.
